Energy Efficiency Case Study

IMEC Engineers and Installs On-Site Nitrogen Generation for a Global Biotechnology Co.

Benefits of On-Site Nitrogen Production

  • Lower life operating cost
  • 24/7 operation
  • Greater control and flexibility
  • Independence from delivery requirements
On-Site Nitrogen Generation production

The Challenge

Nitrogen (N2) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is nonflammable and does not support combustion. Many biotech companies require a continuous flow of inert, high-purity N2 gas to blanket sensitive production equipment.

Our global biotechnology customer in Cambridge, MA had been relying on the purchase and delivery of liquid nitrogen. Due to occasional delivery interruptions, this led to the facility’s supply becoming dangerously low and potentially causing production downtime.

We encouraged the customer to seriously consider on-site nitrogen generation for a less expensive and limitless source of gas, and to address the delivery challenges.

The Solution

IMEC designed and installed a Pressure Swing Adsorption Nitrogen Generation system. It requires the input of Clean Dry Compressed Air (CDA) and selectively adsorbs Oxygen and other trace gases to deliver the Nitrogen at the desired purity of 99.99%.

The generator operates on the pressure swing adsorption principle, which allows for a continuous supply of clean dry compressed Nitrogen.

The on-site Nitrogen generation system produces N2 gas at an 85% cost reduction compared to delivered liquid nitrogen.
